What one would consider trash has boundless possibilities for what it can become. It's an opportunity to innovate, regenerate and give trash a new life and purpose. By weaving together strips of trash bags, I’ve created fabric yardage that I've draped into a sculptural and wearable work of art. All out of 100% salvaged materials. This process is called upcycling, a term that creates a new context for these items that were once destined for a landfill to be transformed into new products of higher value and environmental purpose.
This work represents the structure, strength, and balance of our natural world through geometric lines, paneling, and weaving techniques. These lines are intersections of unity and strength. I turn to nature to drive my inspiration and develop my concept. I allow my environment to take me on a journey of discovery, beauty, and possibility.
My creations are driven by wanting someone to put on my garment and feel confident, empowered, and daring, letting their inner beauty shine through. I push my concepts further by analyzing the use of harmful products the fashion industry uses and how overproduction and consumption are quickly destroying our natural environment. I believe that when you change the way you look at things and consider the potential of everyday items, it can take us on a journey of exploration, creation, and environmental change.
